My name is Max Szadziewski and I’m currently a student at the University of Hamburg. I have completed a B.A. in History and East Asian studies with a specialisation in Japanese Studies. I specialise in Eastern European history, Russian relations with Asian states as well as global history. In my bachelor thesis I worked on German and Austrian picture postcards during the Russo-Japanese War, which took place between 1904 and 1905. I want to extend that topic in my Master’s thesis and investigate the depiction of the “Russian” as a stereotype in picture postcards before the Great War.
For our team, I function as a secretary and assist in administrative matters. In my free time I like to do some woodworking, and play the guitar. Both hobbies have evolved since the start of the pandemic. I’m also looking forward to playing basketball in a group again.
If I was ever stranded on a desert island and had to wish for books, I’d most likely want to read Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Other than that, I’d probably wish for a book about tropical botany! You can contact me via maximilian.szadziewski@uni-hamburg.de.
